Unfortunately the writers removed all of the original class and gender subtext in the original story and then added naked ladies.
A grand disappointment which had such potential to be great. I'm hardly a film critic, but this is my opinion. Through out the movie The Picture of Dorian Gray, filmed in 1945 by Albert Lewin, we the audience sees vast amounts of similarities compared to the book written in 1890 by Oscar Wilde. Renee Carson=Young French woman (as Renie Carson) However, I was very wrong. It fails to even scarcely live up to Oscar Wilde's novel. Well, it seems they have taken some liberties with adapting the story from the original novel, which sadly for Hollywood films, almost always leaves the movie just a bit worse than than the book. It is inevitable that when any classic novel (Oscar Wilde's being no exception) is adapted for the screen, certain liberties will be taken to make it an engaging story to an audience present for 2 1/2 hours. A wasted opportunity. Another example of directors trying to make a quick buck by trashing a classic. A corruptible Lord. Young Dorian arrives fresh on the London social scene and is taken under the wing of Lord Henry Wotton who introduces him to … I have read the book "the Picture of Dorian Gray" twice and have watched more than two adaptations of Dorian Gray before I come across this one. I'm sorry, but he doesn't do justice to the part. Innocent young Dorian Gray has his portrait painted by a close friend. The haunting and bleak tale of power, greed, vanity and inevitable self-destruction is ever present amongst the deceit, opium dens and sin.Rated R for sexual content including nudity, violence and some drug use As is, The Picture of Dorian Gray is pretty much unfilmable. 6 out of 7 found this helpful.
Watton is an avid believer, though not a practitioner, of a hedonistic lifestyle. As well as the subtleties, it misses out the great speeches, and even fails to enforce the real themes in the book to any depth. Looking for something to watch? Haven't read the book in years and was very much looking forward to watching this but from the opening shot I knew I was in for a big disappointment. The Dorian they found (Barnes) has just a bit more expression than a stuffed doll. Lilian Bond=Kate (as Lillian Bond) Dorian Gray is a 2009 British fantasy-horror drama film based on Oscar Wilde's 1890 novel The Picture of Dorian Gray.The adaptation is directed by Oliver Parker, written by Toby Finlay (his first screenplay), and stars Ben Barnes as Dorian Gray and Colin Firth as Lord Henry Wotton. There is no sense of time passing. Soon after, under the influence of amoral Lord Henry Wotton, he jilts his fiancee, leading to her suicide. i am not a fan of horror and, like quite a few people i suspect, was put off slightly by the "horror" classification that most reviews seemed to mention.

Here, the telling of time and its consequence of experience for life's treasures' takes its toll on the body, mind and soul. 37 out of 58 found this helpful. When his true love (Rebecca Hall), the Henry Wotton's daughter, ultimately enters his life he realises he must hide his secret at all costs, even killing . There are no reasons for his rejection, he just rejects her and she drowns.
The 1945 version was close to doing it justice, but changes must be made whenever an adaptation is attempted. A corrupt young man somehow keeps his youthful beauty, but a special painting gradually reveals his inner ugliness to all.
