My overall experience has been that people here are mostly 'live and let live' though.Cost of living varies a lot depending on what part of town you live in -- renting/buying in downtown, certain parts of West Salem and certain parts of South Salem are going to be noticeably higher (and probably newer developments) than what you'll find elsewhere, but you'll find quite a range.
