A few years ago some college friends and I drove from Nashville to Tupelo, Mississippi via the Natchez Trace.
If you are a AAA member, they usually have that kind of information also. The Natchez Trace is a 444 mile long national parkway that runs from Nashville in Central Tennessee to the town of Natchez in Mississippi. I went to the Kings Traven website and they also have listed some B&B's, so thanks SanParis, since we are going without reservations (because we don't know how long we'll be on the Parkway)I will just print out the b&b info and take with. - Now that gas is over $3.00 a gallon we thought it a good time to take a …
It continued to flourish until the rise of the steamboat, then slowly fell into disuse until the National Park Service took over in 1938. I think you can plan on averaging about 40-45 mph plus stops. You might check the southern living magazine website for travel reviews of Natchez and Vicksburg - I know that I have read such articles in the magazines themselves - with many food, lodging, activity recommendations. Managed by the The Natchez Trace Parkway follows the path of the original Natchez Trace trail, first cleared by prehistoric animals making their way between prairie lands and the Mississippi River. I hope you can stay in a plantation home, or at least take a few tours.
grrrrrrrrr. Continue past the deck and on down the dirt trail, and you’ll soon come across even more waterfalls, including one with a crystal-clear pool of water that’s perfect for kids (and adults) to play in beneath the falls.About 10 miles beyond the Tennessee-Alabama border (just past milepost 338), exit onto Lauderdale County Road 8 to see the Exit at milepost 320 onto U.S. Highway 72 and drive 19 miles to Exit the Parkway at milepost 259.7 onto Mississippi Highway 6, and you’ll soon find yourself on Tupelo’s Main Street. If anyone has taken this Parkway of 400 miles I would be very interested in hearing what you liked and would recommend to see. In addition, Natchez is the southern terminus of the historic Natchez Trace Parkway and one of the historic … Mount Locust: Take a quick tour of Mount Locust. I drove the southern portion a couple of years ago.
cd, is this your first trip to Natchez? To see it, exit the Natchez Trace Parkway at Mississippi Highway 553 and go west one mile. The Natchez Trace Parkway ends (or begins) at the Mississippi River, just outside historic downtown Natchez. Actually there are more signs that indicate "...this happened here..." than much in the way of physical historical properties &/or landmarks. Some can be expensive, but it's fun to look. Figure with a few stops and all a day and a half to two days. The Southern Living site is very good, I've bookmarked it.
Many historical sites on and just off the Parkway. I don't know for a fact how much of the parkway was closed. Nice drive if you are in no hurry. Restaurants/sights that were your favorites? Perfect for families.
The mound is 35 feet tall, with two smaller mounds on top, and was once a ceremonial gathering place for tribes from outlying villages. I believe the speed limit is 45mph the whole way if I recall correctly.
I asked when I stopped for a coke and the convenience store clerk told me "about 20 miles". Sorry, I meant the speed limit on the Trace, not the whole state
That's probably an exaggeration, but you might want to pack your own snacks. It's been a while but what I remember is that it's a beautiful drive with NO FOOD. CD: I don't recall exactly where the closed stretch was. Yes, the speed limit is 55 and strictly enforced.
To me, Dunleith would be one of the best to stay "in" since many have B & B rooms that are not in the main house. I think we will take along a sandwich or two and drinks. I also have no idea how long the closure will last.
I'm guessing about 100 miles south of Nashville. Image: If you exit the Parkway at I-20, Jackson, Mississippi, is just 10 miles away. At times, the falls are only a trickle, but after a rain, they’re quite a sight to see.A small hike on a paved path leads you to Jackson Falls, where after a good rain, you can enjoy quite the splash! If you can handle a somewhat steep (though not dangerous) descent, the payoff here is definitely worth it. United States - Has anyone driven Nashville to Natchaz via the Natchez Trace Parkway?
I live in Mississippi, and the speed limit is 55 m.p.h.~strictly enforced!!
We've lived in the Nashville area since 2001 — and all 3 of our houses have been situated relatively close to the Natchez Trace Parkway. Bed and Breakfasts, Cottages, Guest Houses, Retreats and small Historic Hotels located near the Natchez Trace Parkway.
Thanks
I like it a lot for the history, the calm and peaceful drive with little cross traffic, and the pastoral settings. To me, the 'The Trace' is a hidden gem of Nashville — a place to go when you want to get away from it all and be one with nature. I drove the northern portion, with the exception of a 20 miles or so stretch that is closed for repairs, last month.
Image: Stop here and take a self-guided half-mile tour on the raised boardwalk over a stunning water tupelo/bald cypress swamp.
Have fun, ya'll!
