Sega Mega Drive II Console.

The Genesis Flashback boasts 85 built-in games, which is almost double the amount of the excellent Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection that was released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 back in 2009.

As an FYI – this was recently released on the Xbox I think (for those that do not want to hunt down a cartridge).I still have my Sega Genesis. That’s because this collection almost exclusively includes games developed or published by Sega (apart from the bootleg junk, of course).

Like I said earlier there’s no tutorial on how to do the moves and no maps. If you asked a Sega kid what some of the best games on the Genesis were, they’d probably mention names like Gunstar Heroes, Aladdin, Earthworm Jim, Contra: Hard Corps, or Castlevania: Bloodlines. The Sega Genesis Flashback is an attempt to capture a seemingly new, or at least reinvigorated, market while also not being too ambitious.

This also applies to any physical Genesis cartridges you dust off and slot into the top of the Flashback, unfortunately. For what it’s worth, the Sega Genesis Flashback is very easy to set up, packing just the console, two wireless controllers, an AC adapter, and an HDMI cable. Absurdly, this console is also packed with shovelware that has no business in any retro game showcase, seemingly in an effort to pad its number of included games.

But you will need to do a lot of navigating, because the Genesis Flashback is full of incredible, classic video games from my personal favorite console of all time ... but it’s also The box proclaims, in gold-foiled exuberance, 85 BUILT-IN GAMES, and while that’s technically true, it’s more than a little misleading. Phantasy Star IV, for instance, might be the best RPG Sega ever made, and it’s still fun hacking your way through all three Golden Axes with a friend. There are a bunch of Sonic games here -- but where's Sonic 3?That said, there are also many glaring omissions from Sega’s own first-party catalog.

The Flashback includes an actual cartridge slot, meaning that in addition to playing all the games that come pre-installed in the unit, it also supports The games run badly.

Well, you can’t see the bullets.Enemies aside, you’ll also encounter light puzzles, electrocuted floors and when you finally get to earth, you’ll even have to get a job!Lastly, and this is going to sound strange…but one of my favorite elements is picking up items and using terminals.

Wild.

The first release was held in Japan, the name of the console was Mega Drive, a year later it came to the United States under the name Genesis, and a year later released in other countries, again with the name Mega Drive. Now I appreciate how much inspiration the game took from the genre. The sprites are rotoscoped and look just like a real person is running around. That means 28 games in this collection (33%) are straight garbage.Of the 57 legit games included, only 45 are Sega Genesis games. To make matters worse, the interface can only be browsed in a confusing way that uses the d-pad to maneuver the game list on the right while the controller buttons move you through the categories on the left. There are no health bars, no glowing items for you to pick up or any traditional power-ups. Try, try again I guess. Also – You will die. The Sega Genesis Flashback HD has an irritating menu system and a haphazard selection of games.

This is one of my favorite games, but I’ll be the first to admit the controls take a little time to get used to and could be a turn off if your not willing to deal with some trial and error. Streets of Rage didn’t make the cut.
